Kovalam is well-known for its pristine beaches, and Kovalam beaches are considered to be the best beaches in India. Kovalam originally came into the limelight when The Queen of Travancore Sethu Laxmi Bai had decided for a personal residential palace to be constructed on the top of the rock near the beach and the palace was named as Haylcon Castle. Later the palace was chosen by next Queen Karthika Thirunal for her honeymoon with her husband G.V. Raja who realized the potentiality of tourism and approached a UK based company to develop the surroundings and started inviting Guests from Europe at Kovalam and arranged for their accommodation in Haylcon Palace. It was the time when Kovalam became quite popular amongst Europeans and the privileged families of Travancore for their holidays and later it become a popular Tourism destination and became popular across the globe. On a stretch of 17 Kms coastline, Kovalam has 3 prime beaches such as Lighthouse beach, Samudra beach and Hawa beach.
